Being Found is giving way to being cited

Business impact

Your shop window is changing
The front door to a business is moving. Answer engines, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, increasingly decide what a customer sees first, and the overlap between the top Google results and the sources those engines cite has dropped sharply between 2024 and 2026. The market for generative engine optimisation in the United States is expected to reach around 365 million dollars in 2026, growing at roughly 43 percent a year. The discipline has a name now because the problem is real: a business can win at classic search and still be invisible in the answer a customer actually reads. This is a new and very concrete version of a familiar gap, the distance between being good and being seen. The question is no longer only what your website says about you. It is what the machine says about you when a buyer asks. Closing that gap means building the authority, the clarity and the third-party evidence that answer engines reward, because they cite what they can verify, not what you assert.
The rise of social commerce
The same logic is running through the rest of the channel. TikTok has launched an Agentic Hub that lets marketers automate advertising tasks with artificial intelligence agents and a marketplace of pre-built skills. Social commerce is maturing into a primary launch channel, with brands using TikTok Shop for first-to-market products. And the mid-year measurement conversation has turned honest, as teams re-examine what their attribution actually proves while media fragments. In every case the operational grind is being automated, and the human advantage moves to strategy, creative and the strength of the idea being fed through the tools.
For Investors
Credible attribution is what turns a marketing budget into a defensible line in the value creation plan, and visibility inside answer engines is becoming a real driver of demand that does not show up in a traditional traffic report. A portfolio company absent from the answers its buyers read is losing demand it cannot even see. Both are controllable, and both survive diligence.

For founders.
You have almost certainly built something the machine could vouch for, if you gave it the evidence to do so. The work is unglamorous and it compounds: clear claims, credible third-party proof, a business that is easy to understand and hard to misrepresent. Get that right and you show up in the moment a buyer is deciding.
